The 60th Virginia Public Relations Awards
celebrate the power of PR
There's no shortage of PR talent in Central Virginia, that's for sure. And PRSA Richmond's 60th Annual Virginia Public Relations Awards dinner was a celebration of that talent.
"Reviewing the award entries, one of the things that struck me was the tremendous amount of talent there is here," said Chuck Hansen, the chapter's awards chairperson.
"The other fact that leaps out is how effective public relations can be as a tool for meeting business objectives."
At the June 14 awards dinner, held at Richmond's historic Jefferson Hotel, the chapter presented
nearly 75 awards to more than 30 organizations. Among the highlights were awarding the prestigious
Thomas Jefferson Award to Mark Raper, chairman and CEO of
CRT/tanaka, as well presenting best in show honors to Virginia PR Award winners
Charles Ryan Associates and
CarMax.

Virginians for Better Transportation: "It's Time" Public Education Campaign
Category: Community Relations

In mid-2004, business leaders and industry officials across Virginia realized that demands on the Commonwealth’s transportation system were steadily increasing, resources were rapidly depleting and Virginia was facing a transportation funding crisis that had not been seriously addressed with significant funding in 20 years.
To bring attention to this growing problem, they formed Virginians for Better Transportation, a diverse and expanding advocacy group working to implement statewide, multimodal transportation solutions. VBT charged Charles Ryan Associates with conducting a public education campaign to raise awareness of the issue. CRA developed the "It’s Time" campaign, a comprehensive statewide public awareness effort aimed at educating Virginians about the crucial need for transportation funding.

Road Rally for Charity
Category: Creative Tactics
CarMax has a grand opening celebration for each new store that opens in a market. However, because business grand openings occur regularly in most markets, they aren’t considered a high news priority.
CarMax needed a way to attract television news media to the event and get coverage. CarMax also wanted to give back to the community where we were opening a new store. The idea of a "Road Rally for Charity" was born—a 30-minute driving skills event after the ribbon-cutting occurs, where each participant (TV news personalities) “drive” for their favorite charity. CarMax donates a $1,000 to each charity on their behalf and the winner gets an extra $1,000 for the charity. To date, we’ve given more than $100,000 to nonprofit charities in the communities where we build our stores and conduct business, and we’ve had a camera at each of our grand openings since the inception of the Road Rally.
