Presidentís Note: Fall Fitness with PRSA Richmond

Fall is already in the air, which means it’s time for back-to-school shopping, unpacking sweaters from storage, and reconnecting with your friends at PRSA Richmond! Your board of directors stayed busy during the summer planning exciting programs for the remainder of the year and we can’t wait to share them with you.

Our fall lineup kicks off with a not to be missed membership meeting on Sept. 25, “Why Make the Same Mistake Once? Critical Thinking and Crisis Management.” Coming from the West Coast, our featured speaker will be Larry Kamer, the CEO of Kamer Consulting Group, a communications firm that specializes in public affairs and crisis prevention and management. He has been honored as one of “America’s Top 10 Crisis Busters” by PR Week.

The Public Service Committee has been busy working with The Giving Heart, the nonprofit organization chosen from among 37 that applied for free professional communications assistance through PRSA Richmond’s 2013 Nonprofit Alliance program. The Public Service Committee is also planning a free PR workshop on Oct. 25 for the additional 36 nonprofits that applied for assistance from PRSA Richmond. The workshop is scheduled for 8:30-11:30 a.m. at Partnership for Nonprofit Excellence, 7501 Boulders View Drive in Richmond. If you’re interesting in volunteering to help, please contact Glenn Birch, public service committee chair.

Speaking of nonprofits, there’s a brand new resource available to our members in the nonprofit sector! Your PRSA Richmond board has listened to you and has established the first ever section for PR practitioners in the nonprofit sector. Learn more here and get involved! Judi Crenshaw, APR, committee chair, would love to hear from you.

There’s much more on tap to look forward to this fall, from our October and November meetings, to a happy hour, and even an upcoming professional development workshop. Finally, I strongly encourage you to get involved in our student connections shadowing week October 28 through November 1. The program gives area students the opportunity to gain exposure and a better understanding of opportunities in the communications field. It’s a wonderfully rewarding experience, so sign up as a Student Connections mentor today by contacting Linda McElroy at lindammcelroy@yahoo.com or Cameron McPherson at cmcpherson@hodgespart.com

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our fit Chapter. I hope to see you at the lunch program on Sept. 25!
