PRSA RICHMOND ANNOUNCES 2010 COMMONWEALTH AWARD WINNERS FOR PR EXCELLENCE IN VIRGINIA

Thomas R. Morris, APR, presented with the 2010 Thomas Jefferson Award

RICHMOND, VA (May 6, 2010) -- Last night, the Richmond chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) honored statewide organizations and companies for excellence in public relations. The 63rd annual Commonwealth Awards ceremony was held at The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.

“The Commonwealth Awards showcased the most impressive public relations campaigns and tactics from across Virginia,” said Denise Baddour, president of PRSA Richmond. “The ceremony recognized the great work of a variety of PR professionals and underscored the diversity and strength of the PR and communications industry throughout the Commonwealth.”

Awards are separated into two divisions: the Commonwealth Awards, which honor the best public relations programs and campaigns of the year, and the Capital Awards, which honor the best public relations tactics of the year. Winners in each category are honored with an Award of Excellence while runners-up receive an Award of Merit. Finally, Best in Show awards are given to the top overall entries.

Commonwealth and Capital Award entries were judged for research, planning, execution, and evaluation. All entries were judged by the Kentucky “Bluegrass” chapter of PRSA.

In addition to the PR awards, PRSA Richmond presented Thomas R. Morris, APR, with the 2010 Thomas Jefferson Award for Excellence in Public Relations. He is a PR consultant with a long and distinguished career in the communications field. Morris was a business reporter at the Richmond Times-Dispatch for 17 years before becoming the senior vice president at Martin Public Relations (later Slay Public Relations). He currently runs his own public relations firm and is a member of the PRSA Richmond Board of Directors.

The ceremony also marked the first time the Rising Star Award was presented to recognize an outstanding member of the public relations profession with three or fewer years of experience. The inaugural winner was Greg Surber, marketing coordinator with Baskervill, an architectural, engineering, and interior design firm located in Richmond.
