Congratulations to all the winners of the 62^nd annual Virginia Public Relations Awards. What an incredible evening we had – even with the wild summer thunderstorm! I was thrilled to see so many of you representing your companies and clients and was honored to be among some of the most talented PR minds in Richmond.

On June 24, we’ll hear from many of the area’s top PR pros as they share insights for communicating in times of change – a timely topic for all of us. Following the lunchtime presentation, we’ll host a more in-depth program focusing on change in both the corporate and non-profit worlds. No matter where you work, I’m sure you’ll take some good information away from these informative sessions.

After our June program, we’ll take a summer break but will be back in September with an exciting program about social media. As always, our web site will remain updated throughout the summer so be sure to check it for news about summer activities and fall programs.

As I look forward to my next six months as president of this chapter, I’m excited about meeting and working with even more of you. I encourage you to take advantage of your local dues by attending a monthly program, joining a special interest group (we have groups for junior, senior and independent practitioners) or signing up for our new mentor program. And stay tuned for information about our annual Diversity Days program, our fall APR study series and our 2009 public service project.

62nd Annual Virginia Public Relations Awards announced

Best in show awards went to CRT/tanka and the Richmond Department of Public Utilities.

“The Virginia Public Relations Awards highlight the best and most exciting PR campaigns and initiatives from across the state,” said Alissa M. Poole, APR, president of PRSA Richmond. “We celebrated the work of talented PR professionals and recognized the importance of public relations as a tool across disciplines.”

Awards are separated into two divisions: Public Relations Programs and Public Relations Tactics. The Programs division judges comprehensive campaigns while the Tactics division judges specific components. Programs entries can receive either Silver Medallion or Silver Certificate of Merit awards, while Tactics entries can receive either Bronze Medallion or Bronze Certificate of Merit awards. Finally, a Best in Show award is earned in both divisions. The Best in Show winners are chosen from those entries earning Medallion awards.

Silver medallioin winner CRT/tanaka earned the Best in Show honor for "Uncovering George Washington’s Boyhood Home." In just six short weeks and with only $35,000, CRT/tanaka conducted an international media relations campaign for The George Washington Foundation to announce it had located the remains of George Washington’s boyhood home. The campaign garnered coverage across the U.S. and in India, France, Australia, the United Kingdom and Japan.

Bronze Medallion winner City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities earned the Best in Show honor for its "Utility Talk newsletter." Utility Talk is a quarterly bill insert newsletter produced to keep customers current on utility issues, conservation, and natural gas products. In 2008, production of the newsletter was moved in house at a considerable savings, with no reduction in quality.

PR Programs entries were judged for research, planning, execution and evaluation. PR Tactics entries were judged for planning and content, creativity and quality, technical excellence and results. All entries were judged by the New Orleans chapter of PRSA.

The Press is Calling - And the News Isn't Good

Richmond—While most people spent New Year’s Day 2006 making resolutions, Cynthia Price of the City of Richmond Police Department spent the day dealing with one of the most violent days in decades. By the end of the day, two area families had been murdered, and Richmond started the year with seven unsolved homicides.

Price will speak to PRSA Richmond members and guests about this tragic day will share insights on how the Richmond Police responded to this public relations crisis and what lessons were learned. Since 1998, Price has overseen the image of the Richmond Police Department by managing crisis and day-to-day communications. She also is a member of the senior command staff and is involved with policy and other key issues within the department.

PRSA Richmond (www.prsarichmond.org) is a professional association serving Central Virginia public relations practitioners. The chapter and the national organization share the vision to unify, strengthen and advance the profession of public relations. Monthly luncheons are held on the last Wednesday of the month. MANAGING EDITOR OF RICHMOND TIMES DISPATCH TO SPEAK TO PRSA RICHMOND

Richmond—In a world that is connected 24/7, what are newspapers like the Richmond Times Dispatch doing to stay competitive and keep readers? Peggy Bellows, managing editor of the Richmond Times Dispatch will answer this question and many more as the guest speaker at the March PRSA Richmond luncheon on March 28.

As the fall 2006 issue of The Strategist reported, “newspapers are under siege from a number of fronts, including industry consolidation, Wall Street’s demand for ever-higher profits, the explosion of blogs and other Web-based information channels and the rise of ethnic media in response to ever-changing population demographics that render the very concept of ‘mainstream journalism’ obsolete.”

Bellows will discuss what newspapers are doing to stay afloat in this ever-changing news world, and what the Times-Dispatch is doing to increase readership at a time when many daily papers are losing readers. She will also explain how recent leadership changes at the Times-Dispatch are positioning the daily paper for success.

Having joined the Times-Dispatch in January, Bellows has worked at newspapers across the country for more than 27 years. In addition to writing and editing features, sports, local news and a Sunday magazine, Bellows has overseen the front page and launched one newspaper onto the World Wide Web. Most recently, Bellows worked as editor of The Forum in Fargo, N.D. She has a master’s degree in public communication from Syracuse University and a bachelor's degree in English from Bloomsburg State College in Pennsylvania.

Thomas Jefferson Award winners exemplify the best in the profession. The program is open to public relations practitioners in the Greater Richmond metropolitan area. The TJ Award was instituted as an annual peer award in 1998. It continues a tradition begun in 1962 by the former Old Dominion Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Public Service Committee (April 2009) The PRSA Richmond public service committee, comprised of practicing marketing and public relations professionals, selected the Brain Injury Association of Virginia (BIAV) as its 2009 nonprofit public service organization. The BIAV demonstrated a need for public relations assistance, a commitment to support public relations efforts and defined a specific event with specific goals. The PRSA Richmond public service committee will volunteer their time and talents to assist the BIAV with communications surrounding a Scrabble tournament in September 2009. The committee will identify targeted media outlets, develop messages, draft news releases, develop story starters for the organization and train the BIAV staff on how best to respond to media inquires. Richmond Public Relations Foundation

The Richmond Public Relations Foundation was created in 1999 with the purpose of enhancing the field of public relations as a profession in Central Virginia.

The Foundation, a 501(c) (3) charitable arm of PRSA Richmond, administers the David P. Hurdle and William Dietrick Memorial Scholarships. The Foundation annually awards two $1,000 scholarships in each of the former members' names to two rising juniors or seniors. Scholarship applications are solicited from students currently attending Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University, the University of Richmond, Longwood University, and Randolph Macon College who plan to pursue a career in public relations. The two winners are selected by the Foundation Board of Directors.

The Foundation also assists current practitioners by annually reimbursing five members, or their companies, up to $275 when they earn their APR accreditation from PRSA.

The Foundation conducts fundraising throughout the year from businesses, individuals, and the PRSA Richmond chapter to fund the scholarships and add to its endowment fund.
