Some new features this year are a page of selected local blogs and also a page of selected media Twitter handles.

Special thanks go to Mary Lantor, a rising senior at the University of Virginia and a summer intern at CRT/tanaka, who updated the directory for the chapter.

There is a tremendous opportunity in enhancing the image of Public Relations, growing the profession and demonstrating its vitality to any organization’s success. We have the ingredients for a true perfect storm – the impact of social media and its importance in creating meaningful conversations and dialogue with internal and external audiences, the lack of reputation and trust in major organizations and the evolving needs and concerns of CEOs.

As Public Relations practitioners, we are bound by an ethical code of conduct to act as responsible stewards for our company’s/client’s voice in the local, statewide, regional, national or global marketplace. Each and every day, we must strive to demonstrate the real value of Public Relations to our employers or our clients, even though many of them may not have a clear understanding of how our profession can provide strategic services to help them achieve their desired outcomes.

Each one of us has a sense of commitment to and pride in the profession. It’s our duty to explain why public relations matters to our organizations and communities we serve. Thanks to PRSA National and their “Business Case for Public Relations” – one of their five pillars for their 3-year strategic plan – we now have a resource to help us make the case for Public Relations. On a local level, at our Wednesday June 30 luncheon, you can glean information and gain inspiration about the pivotal role of Public Relations through a new lens. I will have the honor and privilege of joining other panelists, top area PR Professionals and their CEOs, in discussing why public relations matters to our organizations and us.

CRT/tanaka Wins PRSA Silver Anvil and Silver Anvil Award of Excellence

NEW YORK (June 7, 2010) – CRT/tanaka, an award-winning public relations and marketing firm known for creative solutions and workplace culture, received a prestigious Silver Anvil Award and a Silver Anvil Award of Excellence from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). Council for Responsible Nutrition “Life…supplemented” Campaign

“Life…supplemented” is a three-year consumer education campaign for the Council for Responsible Nutrition – the leading trade association representing the dietary supplement industry –to promote responsible use of dietary supplements as part of an ongoing health and wellness regimen. CRT/tanaka positioned supplements as one of the “three pillars” of health alongside healthy diet and exercise. The agency commissioned research, studying the behaviors and attitudes of physicians and other healthcare professionals about supplements to create “news hooks” and an authoritative message, “doctors take and recommend supplements,” to efficiently counter ongoing negative media coverage about supplements.

Air New Zealand “Matchmaking Flight” Campaign

At this spring's Commonwealth Awards ceremony at The Jefferson Hotel, PRSA Richmond announced the winner of its inaugural Rising Star Award: Greg Surber. We sat down with Greg recently to get to know more about him and what winning the award has meant to him.

CURRENT JOB:

“I’ve been the Marketing Coordinator at Baskervill since October 2008. As one of only three people in our department, I do a lot of everything – developing plans and strategies, new business development, qualifying leads, prepping staff for interviews, developing PowerPoints, graphic design and social media, educating others about the latest technologies. And whatever else they need me to do.”

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE:

“I interned at Porter Novelli (Boston) in 2007 then went to work full time in their New York Office in 2008. While getting my Masters degree at Boston University, I also served as Account Manager at the PR Lab, a student-run PR firm providing pro bono services to area non-profit organizations.”

EDUCATION:

Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts and Design with a concentration in Corporate Communications, and minors in Writing and Rhetoric from James Madison University (2005).
Master’s of Science in Public Relations from Boston University (2008).

PERSONAL STATUS:

Married to Wendy D’Agostino Surber, a fellow PR practitioner, and proud “parent” of a 5.5 -pound Yorkshire Terrier/Miniature Poodle mix named “Butters.”

HOBBIES & INTERESTS:

“Cooking – I’m on a Greek kick now but my heart lies with Italian food. I also love writing, running (although I’m not the most diligent at it), and playing tennis.”

MOST IMPORTANT PROFESSIONAL LESSON LEARNED (so far!):

“If there is one card you’ve got to have in your deck, it is humility. PR often has the unfortunate reputation of practitioners who are too proud and too full of themselves. But for me, at the root of everything we do is humility. The core of PR is relationship building, which is based on trust and respect, which all circles back to humility.”

ULTIMATE CAREER GOAL:

“I’d love to get back to the agency side practicing corporate PR. It’s such a good way to get experience by working on a variety of accounts, and at the senior level, you get to start having a hand in the strategic and visual identity of the firm. However, I also love to teach, which is what I did as a Graduate Assistant at BU. So, the ultimate goal for my twilight years is to be a Professor of Public Relations.”

WINNING THE RISING STAR AWARD:

“It was a tremendous honor. I’ve met so many other fantastic young PR professionals in the area through my involvement with PRSA, so I was truly humbled by the recognition. “

IMPORTANCE OF PRSA INVOLVEMENT:

“PRSA does a great job of laying out the values and expectations for how a PR professional should go about their job. It’s important to be involved with PRSA both locally and nationally because this career is so much about building relationships, at the very least we need to build relationships with our colleagues. That’s what I’ve liked so much about Richmond. People in the industry are so respectful and even complimentary of each other. There don’t seem to be any antagonistic relationships between agencies or individuals.”

ADVICE FOR OTHER NEW PR PRACTITIONERS:

“I could go on and on, but my top three pieces of advice include:

Express humility in everything you do.
Set goals, but don’t be so rigid about them that you can’t go after great opportunities when they come along. In other words, don’t be too set in your ways.
Above all, don’t’ be afraid to dive in and fail. Your task may seem daunting, but you can do it. And even when you do fail, you learn from it and grow.”

The Press is Calling - And the News Isn't Good

Richmond—While most people spent New Year’s Day 2006 making resolutions, Cynthia Price of the City of Richmond Police Department spent the day dealing with one of the most violent days in decades. By the end of the day, two area families had been murdered, and Richmond started the year with seven unsolved homicides.

Price will speak to PRSA Richmond members and guests about this tragic day will share insights on how the Richmond Police responded to this public relations crisis and what lessons were learned. Since 1998, Price has overseen the image of the Richmond Police Department by managing crisis and day-to-day communications. She also is a member of the senior command staff and is involved with policy and other key issues within the department.

PRSA Richmond (www.prsarichmond.org) is a professional association serving Central Virginia public relations practitioners. The chapter and the national organization share the vision to unify, strengthen and advance the profession of public relations. Monthly luncheons are held on the last Wednesday of the month. Registration is required and the luncheon begins at 11:45 at the Sheraton Richmond West Hotel. The cost is $30 for non-members. Richmond—In a world that is connected 24/7, what are newspapers like the Richmond Times Dispatch doing to stay competitive and keep readers? Peggy Bellows, managing editor of the Richmond Times Dispatch will answer this question and many more as the guest speaker at the March PRSA Richmond luncheon on March 28.

As the fall 2006 issue of The Strategist reported, “newspapers are under siege from a number of fronts, including industry consolidation, Wall Street’s demand for ever-higher profits, the explosion of blogs and other Web-based information channels and the rise of ethnic media in response to ever-changing population demographics that render the very concept of ‘mainstream journalism’ obsolete.”

Bellows will discuss what newspapers are doing to stay afloat in this ever-changing news world, and what the Times-Dispatch is doing to increase readership at a time when many daily papers are losing readers. She will also explain how recent leadership changes at the Times-Dispatch are positioning the daily paper for success.

Having joined the Times-Dispatch in January, Bellows has worked at newspapers across the country for more than 27 years. In addition to writing and editing features, sports, local news and a Sunday magazine, Bellows has overseen the front page and launched one newspaper onto the World Wide Web. Most recently, Bellows worked as editor of The Forum in Fargo, N.D. She has a master’s degree in public communication from Syracuse University and a bachelor's degree in English from Bloomsburg State College in Pennsylvania.
