Leveraging local partnerships to land national attention: How a nonprofit told the story of conjoined twins

Richmond-based World Pediatric Project was founded in 2001 as International Hospital for Children, with the mission to link worldwide pediatric surgical, diagnostic and preventative resources to heal critically ill children in developing countries. In 2011, the case of Maria Teresa and Teresa Maria, now 18-months-old, gave the nonprofit organization the opportunity to partner with Children’s Hospital of Richmond of the VCU Health System to facilitate separation of the girls, who were were born sharing a digestive system and liver.

Join us as Jennifer Curtis, APR, director of communications for World Pediatric Project, shares her experiences in telling this touching, sensitive story with national media, including the coordination of a TLC documentary on the case.

If you have been considering going after your APR, there is no time like the present. In fact, PRSA National has designated April as Accreditation Month. As Anne Buckley, PRSA Richmond accreditation chair, likes to say, “You can’t spell April without APR.”

Members can learn more about APR – the PR profession’s only national post-graduate certificate program – through a series of special events. If you’re interested in pursuing your APR, PRSA Richmond is here to help with a more streamlined accreditation process to make it less time intensive for accreditation seekers and current APRs who participate in the process. Nonprofit Alliance

We’re thrilled that 31 Richmond area nonprofits have applied for public relations assistance through the 2012 Nonprofit Alliance! This initiative is the cornerstone of PRSA Richmond’s 2012 theme, PRSA Serving RVA. The Public Service Committee will review the applications next week and select one organization to support in 2012 in one of three focus areas: strategic planning, event management or a public relations tactic (such as media relations or social media). In addition, PRSA Richmond will be holding a free public relations workshop for area nonprofits in the fall. It’s not too late to get involved. Social Media Breakfast Seminar

Space is still available for our first professional development seminar of the year. Jon Newman, partner and social media leader from The Hodges Partnership, will share his insights about the new Facebook Timeline for Brands, as well as other social media trends for 2012, including Pinterest. The event will be held from 7:30-9 a.m. on Friday, April 20 at the Virginia Society of CPAs office (Innsbrook) at 4309 Cox Road in Glen Allen, Va. The cost of the seminar is $20 for members/students and $30 for non-members. Join us as we celebrate the 65th annual Virginia PR Awards on Wednesday, May 16 at the historic Jefferson Hotel in downtown Richmond. It’s shaping up to be an incredible evening! Public Service Committee Work Under Way

(April 2, 2012) PRSA Richmond’s Public Service Committee has received 30 applications from local nonprofit organizations in the Chapter’s 2012 Nonprofit Alliance project.

Members of the Committee will meet in April to review the applications and select one winning organization. The nonprofits applied for professional PR assistance in one of three areas: strategic planning, event management or public relations tactics.

A team of PR professionals will be tasked with working with the selected organization on meeting goals defined in the application.

In addition, the Committee will plan a Fall workshop for local nonprofit organizations on PR Basics. Date and time to be determined.

Richmond Public Relations Foundation

The Richmond Public Relations Foundation was created in 1999 with the purpose of enhancing the field of public relations as a profession in Central Virginia.

The Foundation, a 501(c) (3) charitable arm of PRSA Richmond, administers the David P. Hurdle and William Dietrick Memorial Scholarships. The Foundation annually awards two $1,000 scholarships in each of the former members' names to two rising seniors. Scholarship applications are solicited from students currently attending Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University, the University of Richmond, Longwood University, and Randolph Macon College who plan to pursue a career in public relations. The two winners are selected by the Foundation Board of Directors.

The Foundation also assists current practitioners by annually reimbursing five members, or their companies, up to $275 when they earn their APR accreditation from PRSA.

The Foundation conducts fundraising throughout the year from businesses, individuals, and the PRSA Richmond chapter to fund the scholarships and add to its endowment fund.
