A Whole New Ballgame: From Gatekeeper to Pitcher

Are more journalists leaving media to work in public relations? Practitioners on both sides share similar skills - - but is that enough to make a successful transition? A panel of former journalists-turned-PR pros will answer these questions and more. Moderated by Paula Otto, Executive Director of The Virginia Lottery, panelists will discuss why they changed their career paths, share ‘insider’ media relations tips and reveal challenges they were surprised to discover in their new jobs. Panelists will include Mychael Dickerson (WWBT to Henrico County Schools), Gordon Hickey (Richmond Times-Dispatch to Governor Tim Kaine's press secretary), Bill Phelps (WWBT to Altria) and Lisa Schaffner (WRIC to UNOS).

Where Are They Now? A host of former broadcast and print media journalists in the Richmond market will be invited to attend the program. We will take a few moments to remember where they were and invite them to tell you what they are doing now.

Around Town: African Community Network Kicks Off its First Fundraising Dinner: “Taste of African Diversities”

In an effort to foster an environment of multicultural unity, The African Community Network (ACN) is hosting its first "Taste of African Diversities" dinner and celebration on March 20 at 4 p.m. at 2010 Carlisle Avenue, Richmond, VA 23231. The event is open to the public. Donations are encouraged.

The event will feature a variety of authentic African cuisines from various countries across the Continent including Nigeria, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Eritrea, Sudan, Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, Liberia, Togo, and Mauritania. Live African music and cultural dancing will reverberate throughout the evening and African artifacts will be on display. The purpose of the event is to promote unity throughout diverse communities within the Greater Richmond Area and to foster a deeper appreciation for African influences, cultures and traditions.

ACN is a new, non-profit organization that aims to serve African families and communities in the areas of education, economic development, health, advocacy and social and cultural affairs. ACN works to promote diversity and helps bridge the gap between communities in order to develop a better quality of life for all.

“ACN is growing to become the face and voice of Africans in Virginia and beyond,” said Sam Dilla, president of ACN and a Sudan native.

The ACN meets the second Thursday of every month at the Greater Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross, located at 420 East Cary St., Richmond, VA 23219. The Commonwealth Awards: the rebranding of the Virginia Public Relations Awards to the”Commonwealth Awards” and introduction of the “Rising Star Awards.”

On the heels of the Academy Awards, PRSA Richmond is excited about producing our version of the Oscars – the Commonwealth Awards – where area PR celebrities will be recognized for their brilliant “performances.” The prestigious Jefferson Hotel will be home to our 63^rd Annual Commonwealth Awards. It’s an event you won’t want to miss.

The Rising Star Awards recognizes an outstanding new member of the public relations profession. To nominate someone for this award or learn more about this award and the Commonwealth Awards program, please visit our site by March 10.

Our new presence on Twitter: through the #prsarva hash tag our goal is to create a deeper and constant dialogue with our members virtually. Along with #prsarva, PRSA Richmond on Facebook and LinkedIn are new communication vehicles for our members. Our goal is to provide you with tools to facilitate online discussions with your peers while sharing updates from PRSA Richmond.

Thomas Jefferson Award
Each year PRSA Richmond recognizes the extraordinary achievements of a seasoned professional. Thomas Jefferson Award winners exemplify the best in the profession. Individuals may be nominated by a colleague or may choose to self-nominate. The program is open only to public relations practitioners in the Greater Richmond metropolitan area.

Individuals should include two copies of the Entry Form with their application packet, which should include the following:

Current resume
A 500-word statement summarizing why the individual deserves the award
At least one letter of recommendation from someone who is familiar with the individual’s work The awards committee will accept an unlimited number of letters of recommendation.
Any work samples that demonstrate the individual’s professional strengths

Rising Star
The chapter’s new Rising Star Award recognizes an outstanding new member of the public relations profession. Individuals may be nominated by a colleague or may choose to self-nominate. To qualify for the award, the nominee must have three or fewer years of professional public relations experience.

Individuals should include two copies of the Entry Form with their application packet, which should include the following:

Current resume
A 250-word statement summarizing why the individual deserves the award
At least one letter of recommendation from someone who is familiar with the individual’s work. The awards committee will accept no more than three letters of recommendation.

Richmond—While most people spent New Year’s Day 2006 making resolutions, Cynthia Price of the City of Richmond Police Department spent the day dealing with one of the most violent days in decades. By the end of the day, two area families had been murdered, and Richmond started the year with seven unsolved homicides.

Price will speak to PRSA Richmond members and guests about this tragic day will share insights on how the Richmond Police responded to this public relations crisis and what lessons were learned. Since 1998, Price has overseen the image of the Richmond Police Department by managing crisis and day-to-day communications. She also is a member of the senior command staff and is involved with policy and other key issues within the department.

PRSA Richmond (www.prsarichmond.org) is a professional association serving Central Virginia public relations practitioners. The chapter and the national organization share the vision to unify, strengthen and advance the profession of public relations. Monthly luncheons are held on the last Wednesday of the month. Registration is required and the luncheon begins at 11:45 at the Sheraton Richmond West Hotel. The cost is $30 for non-members. MANAGING EDITOR OF RICHMOND TIMES DISPATCH TO SPEAK TO PRSA RICHMOND

Richmond—In a world that is connected 24/7, what are newspapers like the Richmond Times Dispatch doing to stay competitive and keep readers? Peggy Bellows, managing editor of the Richmond Times Dispatch will answer this question and many more as the guest speaker at the March PRSA Richmond luncheon on March 28.

As the fall 2006 issue of The Strategist reported, “newspapers are under siege from a number of fronts, including industry consolidation, Wall Street’s demand for ever-higher profits, the explosion of blogs and other Web-based information channels and the rise of ethnic media in response to ever-changing population demographics that render the very concept of ‘mainstream journalism’ obsolete.”

Bellows will discuss what newspapers are doing to stay afloat in this ever-changing news world, and what the Times-Dispatch is doing to increase readership at a time when many daily papers are losing readers. She will also explain how recent leadership changes at the Times-Dispatch are positioning the daily paper for success.

Having joined the Times-Dispatch in January, Bellows has worked at newspapers across the country for more than 27 years. In addition to writing and editing features, sports, local news and a Sunday magazine, Bellows has overseen the front page and launched one newspaper onto the World Wide Web. Most recently, Bellows worked as editor of The Forum in Fargo, N.D. She has a master’s degree in public communication from Syracuse University and a bachelor's degree in English from Bloomsburg State College in Pennsylvania.

Winners of the Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Relations exemplify the best in the profession. The program is open to public relations practitioners in the Greater Richmond metropolitan area. The Thomas Jefferson Award was instituted as an annual peer award in 1998. It continues a tradition begun in 1962 by the former Old Dominion Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. PRSA Richmond is a professional association serving Central Virginia public relations practitioners. The chapter and the national organization, PRSA, are both marking more than a half-century of bringing professionals together to enhance the practice, to provide an exchange of experiences and ideals, and to promote professional development. PRSA Richmond was created in 1995 through the merger of two long-established and respected regional organizations, the Richmond Public Relations Association and the Old Dominion Chapter PRSA. The RPRA was a Richmond-based public relations group formed in 1946. The ODC was formed in 1961 serving professionals across Virginia.
