Congratulations to all the winners of the 62^nd annual Virginia Public Relations Awards. What an incredible evening we had – even with the wild summer thunderstorm! I was thrilled to see so many of you representing your companies and clients and was honored to be among some of the most talented PR minds in Richmond.

On June 24, we’ll hear from many of the area’s top PR pros as they share insights for communicating in times of change – a timely topic for all of us. Following the lunchtime presentation, we’ll host a more in-depth program focusing on change in both the corporate and non-profit worlds. No matter where you work, I’m sure you’ll take some good information away from these informative sessions.

After our June program, we’ll take a summer break but will be back in September with an exciting program about social media. As always, our web site will remain updated throughout the summer so be sure to check it for news about summer activities and fall programs.

As I look forward to my next six months as president of this chapter, I’m excited about meeting and working with even more of you. I encourage you to take advantage of your local dues by attending a monthly program, joining a special interest group (we have groups for junior, senior and independent practitioners) or signing up for our new mentor program. And stay tuned for information about our annual Diversity Days program, our fall APR study series and our 2009 public service project.

I know there are many constraints on your time and budgets these days. Your PRSA Richmond board of directors is always looking for new ways to engage and involve our members so please let us know how we can continue making PRSA Richmond valuable to you. 62nd Annual Virginia Public Relations Awards announced

Best in show awards went to CRT/tanka and the Richmond Department of Public Utilities.

“The Virginia Public Relations Awards highlight the best and most exciting PR campaigns and initiatives from across the state,” said Alissa M. Poole, APR, president of PRSA Richmond. “We celebrated the work of talented PR professionals and recognized the importance of public relations as a tool across disciplines.”

Awards are separated into two divisions: Public Relations Programs and Public Relations Tactics. The Programs division judges comprehensive campaigns while the Tactics division judges specific components. Programs entries can receive either Silver Medallion or Silver Certificate of Merit awards, while Tactics entries can receive either Bronze Medallion or Bronze Certificate of Merit awards. Finally, a Best in Show award is earned in both divisions. The Best in Show winners are chosen from those entries earning Medallion awards.

Silver medallioin winner CRT/tanaka earned the Best in Show honor for "Uncovering George Washington’s Boyhood Home." In just six short weeks and with only $35,000, CRT/tanaka conducted an international media relations campaign for The George Washington Foundation to announce it had located the remains of George Washington’s boyhood home. The campaign garnered coverage across the U.S. and in India, France, Australia, the United Kingdom and Japan.

Bronze Medallion winner City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities earned the Best in Show honor for its "Utility Talk newsletter." Utility Talk is a quarterly bill insert newsletter produced to keep customers current on utility issues, conservation, and natural gas products. In 2008, production of the newsletter was moved in house at a considerable savings, with no reduction in quality.

PR Programs entries were judged for research, planning, execution and evaluation. PR Tactics entries were judged for planning and content, creativity and quality, technical excellence and results. All entries were judged by the New Orleans chapter of PRSA.

A. Prescott Rowe Receives the 2009 Thomas Jefferson Award for Excellence in Public Relations

Each year the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Richmond Chapter recognizes extraordinary achievement by an individual working in the field of public relations. Thomas Jefferson Award winners exemplify the best in the profession and the program is open to public relations practitioners in the Greater Richmond metropolitan area.

“This honor is among the highest PR distinctions in Virginia and recognizes incredible achievements,” said Alissa Poole, APR, PRSA Richmond’s president. “Pres Rowe embodies the qualities of this award through his unparalleled accomplishments in the public relations field and his tireless work as a mentor and community leader in the Greater Richmond area.”

Pres Rowe is the retired vice president of external affairs for Ethyl Corporation and has achieved the APR accreditation from PRSA.

He is the former president of the Old Dominion PRSA Chapter and an inductee in the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame. A true visionary in Virginia’s PR industry, Pres is also a civic leader and has been mentor to countless PR professionals over the years.

While balancing the demands of a successful career in corporate communications at Ethyl Corporation, Pres Rowe was also a trustee or board officer for numerous nonprofit organizations, including Commonwealth Public Broadcasting, where he faithfully served for more than 40 years.

Call for Speakers: PRSA Northeast District Conference, Rochester, NY

The Northeast District of the Public Relations Society of America will host its annual conference on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, in Rochester, N.Y. We anticipate upward of 200 practitioners will attend the event.

The deadline for proposals is Friday, June 5, 2009.

PROPOSALS:

We’re looking for experienced presenters who can motivate and energize an audience on the latest tools, techniques, trends and knowledge of new technology or research pertaining to public relations.

Industry experts, seasoned practitioners, researchers, or public relations service providers are welcome to submit a proposal to individually or jointly present on a topic relevant for PR practitioners with varying levels of experience. We’re looking for presenters from both the corporate and not-for-profit worlds. The tracks chosen for this year’s conference are:

New & Social Media – From digital media to best practices for integrating blogs, Twitter, Facebook, etc. into your PR campaign – we’re looking for case studies and tutorials from experts on these topics.
PR/Marketing – This track will focus on the cross over between PR and marketing initiatives and aim to provide information on how PR practitioners can work with their marketing counterparts on delivering united messages.
Internal/External Communications – We’re looking for speakers to present case studies of great internal and external PR campaigns. How are you using PR to effectively communicate with your employees – particularly in today’s trying economic times when many organizations are forced to cut back? Are you an expert in crisis communications who can share your experience?
Student Tracks – The conference will have tracks geared toward PRSSA members and recent graduates. We’re looking for everything from career development and enhancement (resume preparation, interviewing skills, etc.) to finding your first PR job and building a professional network.
Miscellaneous – Not sure if the proposed session you want to submit fits into one of the above tracks? Maybe you’re an expert on political PR, grassroots PR, ethics or marketing to a diverse audience? We’ll have one track dedicated to all other topics – so please feel free to submit all other ideas under this track.

We are open to any proposal that provides PR professionals with new knowledge, insight and ideas that can enhance their professional capabilities.

Chapter initiates Mentor Program

A mentorship relationship is more than just a cheerleading session or help with a job search. It’s an opportunity to help guide newer professionals through the nuts and bolts of public relations, and show them how to turn theory into practice. It's a mentor's chance to help ensure that tomorrow's public relations leaders have the tools they need to move the profession forward.

The program offers mentors and protégés the opportunity both to share in each other’s successes and to provide support during challenging career moments.

Available only to members of PRSA Richmond, the program will build a relationship that matches a mentor and a protégé who have similar areas of work experience and interests. The mentor and protégé will jointly determine their goals for what they hope to accomplish and their approach on how best to reach them.

As PR professionals we don’t always take the time to honor our own work so I hope you’ll be able to attend this important and motivational event. I always leave with many contacts and even more ideas for future PR projects. Kudos to everyone who submitted an award entry for your (in)credible public relations work, and congratulations to A. Prescott Rowe, APR for being honored as this year’s TJ Award winner!

If you’re a young professional (with less than five years of PR experience) and a chapter member, join our Next Wave group for its spring social on May 13 from 5-7 pm at Avalon Restaurant & Bar. For those of us with a few more years under our belts, make plans to attend PRSA Richmond’s spring social on May 28 from 5-7 p.m. at Gibson’s Grill. The May 28 event is open to chapter members and non-members so encourage all your PR and communication friends to attend for a fun evening of food, refreshments and networking.

Beyond the evening social activities, we have two exciting lunch and professional development programs planned this spring. Join us this month as we welcome Laura Ries, co-author of “War in the Boardroom: Why Left-Brain Management and Right-Brain Marketers Don’t See Eye-to-Eye – And What to Do About It.” In June, we’ll hear from many of the area’s top PR pros as they share insights for communicating in times of change – a timely topic for all of us. Both the May and June programs will include a lunchtime presentation as well as a longer afternoon session for those of you interested in learning more.

The awards will recognize the most (in)novative and (in)fluential public relations campaigns of the year as well as honor the (in)comparable recipient of the prestigious 2009 Thomas Jefferson Award for Excellence in Public Relations: A. Prescott Rowe, APR, Retired Vice President of External Affairs, Ethyl Corporation.

The 62nd Annual Virginia Public Relations Awards begin with a reception at 6:00 p.m. on June 3 followed by dinner and the awards presentation at 7:15 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $60 (members) and $75 (non-members).
